I’m finally joining the ranks of the landline free folks and getting rid of my landline. This was a tough decision as I’ve had the same number for many years but besides a very small population and telemarketers, most people just call my cell. I feel that I’m the last of my friends to have made the switch. The few that do have landlines use them so seldomly they often have a hard time finding the actual phone in their home to use. Of course I’ll no longer have the convenience of just picking up my phone to ring and find my cell phone but it wouldn’t take much more to instant messae a friend to do this for me or facebook status it like my neighbor did.

My dirty little secret is that I may keep using my phone number when I go to stores that ask for my number. After all, what do they do with my number besides sell it? Probably what will happen is that eventually I’ll just decline giving that information which I think we often forget is an option. After all, why does a company need my address and phone number for me to buy a pack of batteries?

In the continued effort to live a more minimal life I have also decided to end the subscription to my beloved Charlotte Observer. Having been a faithful and contiuous subscriber for over a dozen years (and my parents did for many years before that), our time came to an end this month. I grew up with the Charlotte Disturber always bypassing the real current events and enjoying the local and human interest articles. The paper has been a staple in my morning diet for as long as I can remember. As with many things in life, change can be a great thing or at least I’ll keep telling myself that.

This morning I will miss the favorite part of my routine when I enjoy a leisurely breakfast and read the paper. Instead I spend a few extra minutes lingering before I start my day. For those who know me well, I’m working from my “home office” this morning.

Following suit with the Charlotte Observer, this could be AN historic movement!

Au revoir landline and Charlotte Observer! I wish I could say it’s “a bientot” but I’m afraid that may be a lie.
